Open to children and adults of all ages, the concert celebrates the jolly season with operatic gems, featuring Douglas Moore’s comic opera Gallantry, and scenes from Purcinella, Rinaldo, Die Stumme Serenade, Orphée et Eurydice, Der Rosenkavalier, L’enfant et les sortilège, The Bear and La Cenerentola with songs by Tosti & Ellington. Performers include sopranos Hirona Amamiya, Dasha Jensen and Ellen Teufel; mezzo-sopranos Stephanie Benkert and Talin Nalbandian; tenor K’idar Miller; and baritone Kevin Miller; pianist Nobuko Amemiya; violinist David Marks; and stage director Laura Hirschberg.

The program starts with varicolored selections from opera and songs on Sogno [Dream] and Realtà [Reality], composed by Erich Korngold, Richard Strauss, Georg Händel, Christoph Gluck, Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, Paolo Tosti, Gioachino Rossini, William Walton, Igor Stravinsky, Astor Piazzolla and Duke Ellington. The director Laura Hirschberg captivates subtle hues of dramas, creating a cohesive theatrical extravaganza, framed by eloquent violin sonorities of David Marks.

The following Douglas Moore’s Gallantry takes the inherent drama of opera to its most ridiculous extreme by combining it with the already over-the-top world of soap opera. The result is a high stakes, low brow, mad-cap medical drama, complete with commercial interruptions. The intrigues of Dr. Gregg, Nurse Lola, and Patient Douglas satirize and celebrate the bizarre and wonderful elements of opera and soap opera alike.
